LIVERPOOL will go into the forthcoming season as Europe's number one ranked team.
The Reds top UEFA's official rankings thanks to their Champions League performances over the past five seasons.
Having won the competition in 2005, been runners up to AC Milan in 2007 and made it through to the semi-finals this year, Rafa Benitez's team has accrued more ranking points than any other club in Europe.
Liverpool top the rankings table with 104.284 points, giving them a one point lead over Italian giants AC Milan.
Next on the list are Chelsea and Barcelona, with Arsenal in sixth and current Champions League holders Man United in seventh.
Other British teams on the list include Newcastle in 19th, Rangers in 20th, Middlesbrough in 27th, Spurs in 31st, Bolton in 41st, Everton in 44th and Celtic in 52nd.
Liverpool have moved up from third to first thanks to last season's run to the semi-finals, meaning they top UEFA's rankings for the first time since 1985.

As of summer 2007, Liverpool had a debt of £43 million in bank borrowings, and £13 million in other loans, although over the next five years they have a predicted operating profit of £98.4 million, the fourth highest in the country.
Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr bought Liverpool in March 2007 for £218.9 million but burdened the club with debt topping £105 million when their loan was refinanced in January. And the club's 13 per cent increase in wages from 2005/06 to 2006/07 has not been converted into greater success on the pitch in the Premier League.
However, the club were listed as having £20 million net assets before the beginning of last season, and had the third highest stadium utilisation – 98.8 per cent of their 44,721 capacity. Furthermore, they brought in £28 million through television money in 2006/07.
Ker se že dolgo ni nič zgodilo na LFC-Dubai relaciji naj le malce zadimim zadevo...nič novega ali pretresljivega ampak jebiga...par zanimivih odstavkov..
As he says, Dubai potentially buying not just one, but two of Europe’s most famous football teams was “hot” at the time. A simple “Arsenal could be interesting” comment, which I innocently slipped into the article I wrote after we last met, turned into a story so hot that it flew across the world’s media faster than a 25-yard bullet from Liverpool’s Spanish striker, Fernando Torres.
Da bravo hiksiIn the case of Liverpool FC, Dubai was much closer to taking control. In February last year, Mr Hashimi and Zabeel were preparing to take a 20 per cent stake in the club that won the Champions League in 2005 and is one of the most decorated, watched and supported in the world. In partnership with Dubai International Capital (DIC), an investment vehicle of the Government, and its chief executive Samer al Ansari, an avid Liverpool fan, Dubai had been told by private equity advisers that the club was a “bargain buy” at about £200m. In Mr Hashimi’s words, it was a “steal”.
But the Liverpool board decided to sell to the US billionaires Tom Hicks and George Gillett, with an offer worth £5,000 per share, valuing the club and its £44.8m debts at £218.9m.
Dubai was not amused, and understandably so.
It had arguably offered a better price, promised a brand new 60,000-seat stadium and an open chequebook to buy new star players. Today, the club may well be regretting its hasty decision, since what followed was far from pretty. The Hicks-Gillett relationship rapidly disintegrated and in March this year, Mr Hicks panicked. Desperate to offload his half, he toured the globe pleading with investors. But what happened next was the last straw for Dubai. Mr Hicks flew to the emirate with the intention of offering his stake to those who had been snubbed last year. Mr Hashimi – along with the other previously interested Arab parties, including Mr Ansari – was in no mood to negotiate, and Mr Hicks left with his tail between his legs.
“It was a great deal at the time, but it either falls into play or it doesn’t,” says Mr Hashimi, a football fan himself, now completely at ease with the situation.
