Well we scheme and we scheme but we always blow it,
We've yet to crash, but we still might as well tow it,
Standing at a light switch to each east and west horizon,
Every dawn you're surprising,
and in the evening one's consoling
Saying "See it wasn't quite as bad as"
Well, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know.

We'll always have Istanbul
Oliver Kay, Football Correspondent

The execution, when it came, was mercifully swift. Rafael Benitez had resisted long enough, winning just about every battle he had faced during the civil war that has been the story of the modern Liverpool, but this time he knew the end was nigh.

A personal view is that all that fighting – the battles waged over the years against Rick Parry, Tom Hicks, George Gillett and Christian Purslow, not to mention the paranoia that had come to cloud his view of the media and of the Premier League’s managerial fraternity – took something out of him. It wore him down and left him so isolated that it became clear several weeks ago that his position had become untenable.

Benitez always felt he was doing the right thing by drawing attention to the many failings of the Liverpool board down the years, whether it was highlighting Parry’s occasionally ponderous approach to transfer negotiations, the club’s lack of commercial acumen, the countless calamities of Hicks and Gillett or the inexperience in football terms of Purslow, who was appointed managing director last summer. Almost all of his criticisms were valid, but, no matter how many battles he won, winning the war always looked beyond him.

There is a stark contrast here with Sir Alex Ferguson, his great rival and another whom he took on with a little too much vigour. Both Liverpool and Manchester United have been saddled with owners who have put the clubs at huge and unnecessary financial risk, severely restricting their ability to compete in the transfer market. Ferguson, to the disappointment of many United supporters, has remained fiercely loyal to the Glazers, whereas Benitez took it upon himself to lead the supporters’ protests against Hicks and Gillett.

If Benitez had succeeded in driving the cowboys out of town and ensuring that Liverpool were passed into appropriate ownership, there could have been no better legacy. But the ruinous regime of Hicks and Gillett has outlived him on Merseyside, which will only heighten the anger among those supporters who are assembling outside Anfield to protest as I write this.

The Benitez who arrived at Anfield six years ago was different to the Benitez that left. As with Gerard Houllier, he ended up terribly paranoid. On arrival, unlike Houllier, he was completely indifferent to what might was written or said about him in the media. By the start of this season, he had become obsessive about it, just as he had become obsessed with the idea that everyone who arrived at the club was there to undermine him – which of course becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It reminds me of that old Kurt Cobain quote: “Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not after you.” And there were people after him – not only in the boardroom, but in certain sections of the media, where he continued to be ridiculed after winning the Champions League and getting to another final, winning the FA Cup and taking a team to second place in the Premier League with a highly creditable total of 86 points.

Many will say that is the least Benitez should have done with the money he spent over his six years at Anfield, that he failed because he did not win the Premier League. Not winning the title does indeed equate to failure at Anfield, because that is the mission that he was given, but at no stage over the past six years would any sensible observer have expected Liverpool to finish ahead of both United and Chelsea, both of whom had far greater financial resources (wage bill, if not necessarily transfer budget in United’s case) and had been in a far stronger position at the time he arrived in 2004.

If this sounds like a defence of the indefensible – of the man who squandered vast sums on Robbie Keane and Alberto Aquilani and far smaller sums on a bewildering array of misfits such as Josemi, Philipp Degen, Mark Gonzalez and Sebastian Leto – it is intended more as an attempt to redress the balance. It is hard to think of another manager who has attracted such polarity of views and, while I believe that his regime at Anfield had run its course, it is not necessarily for the reasons that are quoted most often.

The usual sticks with which to beat Benitez are his transfer record, his love of squad rotation, his overly fussy tactical approach, even his penchant for zonal marking, as if it is something from another planet. My criticisms of Benitez are different: his divisive behaviour, his scattergun approach to recruiting young players, his stubbornness (which can also be a virtue) and his lack of interest in intangible aspects of the game, such as team spirit, something which may have contributed to the long slumps that Liverpool have suffered in almost every season under his management.

Last season’s slump was one from which Benitez was not going to recover. There has been a depression around Anfield since last summer and, whatever his qualities, it was clear he was no longer the man to lift it. But who is? The club is in a terrible state and in need of far more than a new manager. As he sees it, Benitez did his best to take Liverpool to a better place. For that reason alone, he will earn the eternal affection of many supporters, even if he may have ended up doing more harm than good. And then, of course, there is Istanbul. He will always have Istanbul.

Well it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know...had it not been for him....tako pa bomo vedno imeli Istanbul, da...in imeli bomo Cardiff...in marsikaj drugega...

Tony Barrett:
Hello Kamal,
This myth is being perpetuated to ridiculous levels now. I spoke to a very senior Liverpool player today, one who has been outspoken in his criticism of the owners, and he told me the Liverpool dressing room was no different to any other. There are players who don't like Benitez. there are others who do like him and there are those who change their opinion of the manager according to variables such as whether or not they are in the team and results.
Antun prićao i sa vlasnicima...

You're spot on Tom. As ever. There are £351 million reasons why the club is in tip top shape. It's a shame you haven't visited Liverpool lately to see the fruits of your labour for yourself. The people over here love you.

Join the club Mrs Gillett. There are plenty of people who are desperate to know where your custodian of a son is.
